The required statement

Trail & Terminal is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How the links work

Product buttons on this site pass through our own /go redirect and land on an Amazon search for that exact product, carrying our Associates tag. If you then buy something, Amazon pays us a percentage of the sale. You pay the same price you would have paid without the link -- the commission comes out of Amazon's margin, not out of your pocket.

We link to Amazon searches rather than to individual product pages because we do not hold a live product-data feed for this site. A search link always resolves to whatever is currently sold; a hardcoded product link rots silently the moment a listing changes. It also means we are never tempted to publish a product identifier we did not verify.

Why there are no prices on this site

We hold no live price data, so we print no prices. Every buy button reads "check price on Amazon" and sends you to the current listing. If a figure cannot be verified at the moment you read it, this site says so rather than showing you a number that was true some time in the past. The same rule covers discounts, savings percentages and anything implying a deal we cannot confirm.

What commissions do not affect

  • Which products appear. Picks come from the criteria in how we pick. No brand has ever paid for inclusion, and there is no mechanism for one to.
  • The order they appear in. Commission rates differ by category. Ranking does not follow them. Where the cheaper or better-supported option earns us less, it still goes first.
  • What we say is wrong with something. Every pick on this site carries at least one honest negative, including the top pick, including the expensive one.

Retailers we earn nothing from

Sometimes the right answer for a reader is a brand-direct store or a specialist retailer we have no affiliate relationship with. We link to them anyway, and we label those links on the page as non-earning so you know the difference. At the time of writing that includes:

  • REI -- Reference only -- we earn no commission on REI links.
  • YETI -- Brand-direct reference. Not joined on any network we hold.
  • Osprey -- Brand-direct reference. Not joined on any network we hold.
  • Jackery -- Brand-direct reference. Not joined on any network we hold.

Amazon is currently the only retailer this site earns from. If that changes, this page changes with it before any new link goes live.

No sponsored content, ever

We do not publish sponsored posts, paid reviews, guest posts or paid link insertions, and we do not accept free product in exchange for coverage. If we ever did take payment for something, it would be labeled as advertising at the top of the page it appeared on, not buried here.
